One of Mary's latest commissioned pieces has found One of Mary's latest commissioned pieces has found its forever home.

The clients had been searching for a long time for the perfect artwork to fill the space beside their window. Mary visited their home, spent time getting a feel for the space, and got to know them and what they were looking for. She then created three smaller sample pieces before developing the final work from the design they connected with most.

After it was installed, they said, "It feels like it's been there forever." There really isn't a better compliment.

The piece is felted from natural grey wool sourced from four different breeds of sheep native to the North Atlantic. The silk and cotton inclusions are all dyed with indigo, while the cotton inclusions at the bottom are printed with rust, creating subtle layers of texture and colour. A natural landscape for a home surrounded by natural landscapes.

A little extra detail—if you look closely at the interior photo, the table beneath the artwork is one I made a few years ago. It's always special to see my furniture and Mary's textiles sharing a space.
We installed another sculpture—this time a colla We installed another sculpture—this time a collaboration with Moheb Soliman and the Grand Marais Art Colony, with funding from the Minnesota State Arts Board.

Moheb is creating A Poem of Sublime Proportions, an ambitious work that will encircle the Great Lakes. He will be traveling to communities throughout the region, interviewing people and weaving their words together into a single poem that reflects the voices and spirit of the lakes.

For our part of the project, we “found” a 29-foot driftwood cedar log and had it delivered to the studio. After Moheb interviewed people around Cook County, he gave us the words for this section of the poem. I laid out the lettering on the log, and then Wesley Hathaway and I carved it by hand.

Cedar is usually a pleasure to carve when it’s sound, but driftwood is another story. Years in the water make it less predictable, with varying hardness and hidden surprises like ant colonies and bees. Once the carving was complete, I painted the letters in gold before delivering the log to Studio 21. There, a great group of volunteers helped us unload it and set it in place.

It was a super fun project to be part of, and grateful to everyone who helped make it happen.

The poem carved into the log reads:

“The Region here – Cold – Breaks with peace – The water – Falls gorge – Us in every way.”

I’m excited to see how all of these community voices come together as A Poem of Sublime Proportions continues its journey around the Great Lakes.

Last fall, we completed a Swedish Gustavian style bedroom set for a client. The set included two chests of drawers, a dresser, three library cabinets, and a king-size bed. Lots of handwork on this one, hand-cut dovetails, hand-carved fluting, and custom mouldings.
I had a great crew working on this with me, including Wesley Hathaway, Owen Burgdorff, and Emma Sievers

With the objective of simply doing great work a ripple effect occurs, a bar is set for everything you do, which may not only lift your work to new heights, but raise the vibration of your entire life, it may even inspire others to do their best work. Greatness begets greatness. It’s infectious.
